Metztli was believed to be an extension of goddess Coyolxauhqui, who is the daughter of earth goddess Coatlicue. In Mayan mythology the moon was goddess Ix Chel who in many writings was referred to as “rainbow woman” and was the wife of the sun god Ak Kin. In both Aztec and Mayan mythology the moon is a feminine being whose power was important to farmers due to its power to fertilize the land and women due to the moon’s waxing and waning cycle. In this illustration La Luna is a waxing crescent decorated with colorful flowers to represent the Mayan referral to the moon as “rainbow woman” and to represent both Aztec and Mayan belief of the moon being a femine powerful being, essential for the growth and fertilization of crops.
