Historically, this migration was often forceful and violent, killing thousands in the name of colonization. In the past decade, migration has been fueled by the lack of social and economic mobility in our native countries and the elusive idea of the American dream. Thousands of adults and children make the dangerous and almost impossible journey for the opportunity of a better life. This sacrifice has shaped the culture, language, and experience of both first and second generation immigrants. In this illustration a father carried his child on his shoulders to represent how often it is fathers who make the trip to America first so that they can find a job and send money back to their families. The single bag he carries highlights the small number of things he could bring with him in the journey showcasing how immigrants come with nothing more than a dream, hope, and the will to work.
